The whole world watched On the 27th April 1994, the whole world watched South Africa. Millions of people waited for hours to vote. Men carried old and sick people to the voting places. Officials from other countries watched too. They wanted the elections to be fair. It took many days to count the votes but it was soon clear who the winner was. The new president believed that people of all races and colours could live together in place and equality. The new president was Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela became South Africa's president on the 10th May 1994. Many internatinal government leaders met in South Africa. FW de Klerk became deputy president. The building of a new country could start. Mandela's time as president was a time of great problems and great progress. South Africa was really two countries. He wanted all SOuth Africans to share one country. WHen apartheid ended, South Africa could again trade with other countries. This helped the economy. Mandela did what he thought was right. He fought for freedom and equality. It was a long and difficult fight, but he won in the end. In 2004, at the age of eighty-five, Nelson Mandela retried. He dad the love and respect of millions of people. Now it was time to rest.
