It looks different from a honey bee because it has a round fat body. It also has bright orange and black colours on its back. Bumblebees do not produce very much honey, so there is never enough for people to collect and eat. These bees are not dangerous and they hardly ever sting. Most bumblebees live in colonies or groups of about 200-300 bees. They have a queen. The queens lay the eggs after sleeping all winter. They wake up and start flying around from March to May. This is a good time to see them. They use their long tongues to drink from flowers in the spring. Then they start to look for places to make a nest. There are about 250 types of bumblebees in the world 26 of them in Britain. Three types are already extinct in the UK and many others are in danger of extinction. Large fields of grass have disappeard. This means there are not so many places for bumblebees to find food or make nests. Gardens are an extremely good habitat for bumlbebees.
